voltage regulator

You don't need any diodes with a LM317, adding diodes is a silly idea unless you use them to prevent the source or output from being shorted as shown on the datasheet.

I think hotwaterwizard meant using the diodes as a voltage regulator and is perfectly acceptable at low currents. Note that you would need five diodes to get 3V which might take up too much room on the PCB.
