Designing a sound level meter is a mean task!
There are many things to be considdered: Microphone frequency response, min. + max. SPL levels to be measured, mic. directionality and distance to surrounding objects. Frequency of interest and weighting curve (flat, A, B, C etc). Low-noise amplifier design and calibration (how would you do the calibration?). And so much more!
Radio Shack has a $40 unit. Get one to get an idea of the complexities involved.
Cheers, E
