i have just finished my weekend project (its already long ago)

i use a 555 timer and 4017 chip

heres the result

Slightly confusing that your PICKit2 is in the picture (I assume for power), but it is nice! Good work :)

I plan the layout then make prototypes neatly on stripboard. Whenever I see the tangle of many wires on a breadboard then I laugh at the mess.

I guess you are lucky that your tangle of wires works as well as it does.
 
I myself would have gone with just a PIC and leds or bargraph.
THEN have several patterns to choose from.
 
everything becomes easier with uC but i just want to make this project works :)

Nice little demo, there is absolutely nothing wrong with your layout...:)

I have seen and built, much worse than that and they still work....
