Gordan McComb has "building robot drive trains", among other books. They're good.

Default Beginner Robot Books

Myke Predco also offers several books and even kits slanted towards beginning hobby robotics. If you stop into Chapters and check out the Math\Science section, you'll find two kits from Tab to build robots, both are co-works of Myke Predco. These kits come with everything you need to assemble and build your own first robot. Of course, you can always just go to his site, www.myke.com and have a look there.

Good luck!
