Default Career Path : Hardware? or software?

I am going to graduate soon, and now i haven't make out my mind if i wan to be a hardware engineer, or software engineer.
Firmware or software engineers sounds more like computing, not quite like the traditional hardware engineer.
So.. which would you choose to be?? why??

What are you actually graduating as? - presumably if you are graduating as a programmer, then software would be the way to go - but if you are graduating in electronics, then hardware looks a better bet. In either case, the two are tending to drift closer together as time moves on.

hm. I suppose those who come here are engineers or enginering students? Oh yeah, I'm in engineering too.
Nowadays, as technologies getting more complicated, job scopes tend to be more specialised. Unfortunately, there aren't many job opportunities to fresh graduate that allow the practise in both hardware and software (well, I guess that is the situation in my place).
Doing hardware is great, but doing software is fun too. Tough choice.

Depends on where you are. I gather software engineering is increasingly outsourced to cheaper countries, so at the moment it seems that job isn't as safe as hardware engineering. I would also guess that hardware engineering has a much wider scope.
