look at the markings on the chip.
if its an 89C52-12 then the max safe freq is 12MHz.
if its an 89C52-20 then the max safe freq is 20MHz.
if its an 89C52-24 then the max safe freq is 24MHz.
also refer to the datasheet, near the back.
