Yes, they started to join surface mount about 6 months ago

Just grab your neighborly micro controller datasheet and view the Package types.

I would have to say that you have not genuine interest in electronics yourself.

Not only microcontroller, most of the IC comes in smt package. Who wants to buy a 100 pins DIL package?
