I see it's just wires and not terminals. connect wires 1 & 3 together and add another wire that goes to x on the board. Connect 2 & 4 together add a wire that goes to Y on the board . You can see where they go in the drawing. Now attach wires comming fron the relays--- M5 to wire 5 from the motor, attach M6 to the wire 6 (is that a 6 or an eight?? ) from the motor. The relays can be had at Radio Shack for <$8.00 , thier Potter Brumfeild. # 275-288 http://www.radioshack.com/category.a...3%5F000&Page=1

About the safety factor: In the US we must use a sensor, typicaly an ir beam and reflector to monitor the door/gates path. If the path gets obstructed during operation (closing) the close circuit drops out and the open circuit is energized..Older controls would just stop, pinning the victim in its path..If the ir beam is just wired in the open circuit ,simply waving your hand in front of it would allow you to open the gate. In other words it must be enabled only when the close circuit is active..

I am wondering, is the number of relay 275-288? and not 218? For some reason its a 8 and not a 6 on the motor wiring diagram. But I understand either way. I am not too advanced in electronics so I have to look over your diagram in more detail but what you have given me helps!

My original plan was to have the main wires that dont change wired directly to the board in line and the ones that chance on a relay some how. I think your idea incorporates this.

As for the sensor, it crossed my mind but how much do they go for?

One other question, I want to open and close the gate with a remote from a garage door setup. Is there a place that i can buy the sensor and the remote? I am from Vancouver Canada so it might have to be a Canadian store.

Yes, the relay # is correct. all the high side stuff is isolated , the control is 12VDC.

The cost of building this thing will prolly reach or exceed the cost of buying a garage door opener and adapting it for your use. It will already have limit switches, Ir photo eye, remote transmitter and receiver , etc. all you'd have to do is swap out the motor basically.. Do a search for openers on the net . Oh and the relays have sockets as well so if one goes ya can swap it easily. If Your doing it as a learning experience thats cool

TillEulenspiegel thanks a million!! You just saved me so much time and money I really thank you! I want to get this gate up and running for security, we have had a lot of unwanted visitors. As well as learn new things.

Now I just have to figure out your schmatic haha I kinda got the jist of it. I have the motor that was bought for the gate so I better put it to use and also the garage door motors are less then 1hp from what I found.

Im working on the relay to motor and a way to stop the gate once its opened so far so it dosent over swing almost like a switch on a spring but thats kinda hokey. It will be belt driven incase something goes wrong and then it will slide on the pulleys and maybe a way to have a circuit that senses too much pull and shuts off like a saftey. Lastley looking at a saftey sensor for objects between the gates. All in all I really want to learn how this all works and at the same time save me two grand haha.

Thanks again TillEulenspiegel!
