Yes it would.

Take a look at what these guys did (the best skydiving altimeters in my opinion)

Although it looks mechanical, it is in fact a digital altimeter.

If you have a lot of resources, not usually available to the hobbiest, its amazing what can be made. Probably, they are using an absolute position encoder, flat brushless motor, and gear train for the dial...all interfaced be µcontroller...along with the solid state pressure sensor. But, that's just a speculation.
