Default Resistor/Capacitor types

Is the normal cylindrical resistor called "carbon composition"? I can't find any info on the differences... anyone got a good informative website.

also, is a "1M variable resistor" just a potentiometer? for example... is this what i need?
http://www.mouser.com/index.cfm?hand...oductid=369409

also, same question with capacitors.... do i want carbon? electrolytic? etc.

well, resistors art of different types, some are carbon or chemical resistort, usually for low current and power, ather types are metaloxide type, these suport a larger current, and a medium power, and there are wired reisitors, these are intended for high current and are usually made of a wire, rounden on a case and placed in a ceramic case for transferring the heat to the exteroir
here ae some links, check them out:

you micht find domething here 2, but i didnt look...

i see some explanations calling them carbon, however some websites (ie http://www.mouser.com) differentiate between carbon film and carbon composition. "composition is $.22 and film is $.07. i'd stick with the later if that's possible?

also, same question on capacitors?

thanks again

Me, I am a little confused on what you are asking for. What do you need these resistors and capacitors for. It all depends on the project. Carbon film resistors is what are common today, as the composite ones were the cylinder ones, and the films are bone shaped.
One the caps, it just depends. There isn't a carbon cap, I don't think. But there is ceramic if that is what you meant to say. There is also oil filled, mica, air, tantalum, electrolytic, and maybe some others I forgot.
Oil filled you generally find in microwaves, tantalum you would find in aviation and military, electrolytics and mica and ceramic you generally find anywhere, and air is obsolete.
So a little more infor would be nice.
