Sorry. I suggested the PIC project as it's pretty much complete and thought perhaps some kind soul near the OPs location might be able to 'burn' him a one-off '628A to send to him.

Did you try searching for CD4495?

There might even be an HC/LS version of the TTL version.

Failing that, you could use a CMOS BCD decoder with some additional logic to make a hex decoder.

No I didn't. I'm not familiar with this particular component and I was simply interested in looking at the data sheet. I would have no way of knowing that a CD4495 is the same device, which by the way doesn't show up in a part number search on Mouser either...

As far as suppliers are concerned, I Googled for a couple of miniutes and this is what I've found:

Just a note on the 16F628A version. The PICs have about 65ohms resistance on when driving an output pin. You could skip the resistors as the displays would only get about 29ma per segment (assuming Red displays), plus you're muxing them so they should be just fine, bright too.

Those look like the bulk surplus dealers. If the part is obsolete and that difficult to obtain it's probably not worth even looking at the data sheet but thank you very much for going to the trouble anyway...

Mike,
The op lives in Iowa. Is that anywhere near Michigan? (I don't have a US map handy). All I know is that there's a big ocean between him and me!

If so, would you be prepared to be the "kind soul"?

Hi Len,

Just checked and I have a couple '628A chips. I would be happy to send him a programmed chip (for free) if he doesn't mind waiting about ten days to get it. I'll do it when I get back in town next weekend and have wifee post it the following Monday or Tuesday. If he's interested, please send me or have him send me his postal address (to k8lh_at_arrl.net).

Regards, Mike

I don't know why I bother to post if I'm just going to be ignored.
The ICM7218 is available from Digi-key. They will ship over the ocean.

You could use a MAX7219, this is a SPI based device, that can provide alpha-numeric (limited) capability to a seven segment display. The device also has SPI commands to adjust the brightness of the segments.

The drawback is you need to have a micro-controller like a PIC to drive it, but you always develop a PC based one using the printer port (LPT).

thanks

Both the ICM7218 & MAX7219 would generally require a microcontroller. The MC14495 wouldn't.
