Default Current Shunt Question....

Hello all,I was just wondering how a DC current Shunt works.I have a few power supplies I built with a 600 Amp DC Current Shunt, and matching Amp meter and it was close to what my Fluke DC Amp clamp was getting.Just wondering how they operate, thanks for the help...:-)
