Default 5x7 LED matrix

i am probaly missing something here but from my understanding of the way a 5x7 LED matrix is wired you cannot for example turn on 1:1 , 1:3 and 2:1 without also turning on 2:3 but this does not seem right can anyone help plz?

It's called multiplexing, you can select individual LED's by selecting a specific row and column.
