The Basic Pin necessay for motorized potentiometer are
2 pins for supply to motor 3 pins for potention meter (2 for fixed taps and 3rd for variable tap) but I have seen motorized potentiometers which have two types of potentiometer one was linear and other was tapered so resistance given by both was different and had 6 pins If you provide some part number or some more information we can give you more details if possible /Edit/ Sorry I could not see your whole post before here is the datasheet http://www.drtube.com/datasheets/alps-mc.pdf
