| I was wondering what exactly a solenoid is and what it can do or does do. Also how it works, as in if you supply a specific current/voltage or whatever will it pull/push ( or whatever it does). any help appreciated. regards ivan c. | |

| A solonoid is a coil of wire that acts as an electromagnet. When voltage is applied, a metal shaft moves through the coil. Here are some pictures. http://www.solenoidcity.com/solenoid...oidcatalog.htm | |

| If i supply the appropriate voltage/current, will this activate the solenoid or does it need extra components?? solenoid do push or pull right? thx | |

| No, you don't normally need extra components - you would normally apply a DC voltage to it, as AC would cause it to be constantly reversing it's poles. Some solenoids, however, are designed for AC use. | |
