I pity anyone who looks at one of my old posts. My attachment to it is gone!

You obviously like posting attachments

I'm only at 1% of my quota!.

Hi Nigel,
Yeah, I guess i must get my own website like you so I can link to it. I frequent 4 or 5 different forums and the questions are usually the same (many times from the same people!)

I draw my circuits in PowerPoint, save them initially as .ppt files, and when ready for downloading, do a "Save As" and choose .gif from the drop down box.

.gif files can be loaded into this forum.

I recently read that AOL who owns Compuserve who invented GIF's are charging users of GIF's a royalty fee. It said to avoid being charged people should use the freeware PNG type of picture file.

No, it's not AOL or Compuserve, it's a large old computer firm (I can't remember the name off hand), but years after GIF's became popular they decided they held the rights to the compression system used.

They have been charging software companies to allow them to use it ever since.

There's also been a massive response against the company for doing this!.

It's been going on for many years now, so long I can't remember the companies name - no doubt someone will mention it?.

Hi Nigel,
I got the info from my computer newsletter here:

(FYI: PNG--- the "portable network graphic," is the nonproprietary filetype developed to replace the GIF ("graphics interchange format") file type, after AOL/Compuserve asserted ownership of the latter and threatened to start charging a license fee to people who distributed graphics as GIFs. Because of this, GIF use is on the wane; PNGs and other nonproprietary formats are now preferred. )

Hello, Audioguru,

I have posted many .gif files into this forum and have not been charged.

I can't see how they could charge me anyway.

However, since PowerPoint is able to save .ppt files as .png. I'll start using them.

Thanks for the tip.

OK, as nobody else popped up, I googled it!, it's Unisys who own the rights to the compression used in GIF, have a look at http://www.starlink.rl.ac.uk/star/do...x/node130.html for details.

I have not tried it with this forum but with my own forum u can link your images to the forum from any site including your own site. If u dont have a site to host your images u can use sites such as www.photobucket.com .

This info should work with almost all forums on the net today.

Ever since I deleted my uploads, the webmaster and owner of this site changed the upload limit to be unlimited.
I wonder how many of my uploads are duplicates, since many people ask the same questions.

If you want to save space then find the post with the image in, click on it then copy the text in the address bar and pate it into your post between [img][/img] tags.
