fixed it. it was a total of 2 components, those being the two components directly after the AC input to the board... a 150 ohm 3 watt power resistor, and a 220uF 25v capacitor. capacitor was just plain dead (completely open-circuit) and the resistor was blown (measuring 6.2k and it had a burn mark on the bottom.

replaced those two and it works again. So I don't think people have as much to be scared about with buying these stations... if anyone does get one send me an e-mail or something and i can provide you with the schematic just in case.

Well, I'm definitly going to put in my order there to get the free DMM, my sears bit the dust. I was blowing up some eproms with my Varac, and as I was switching through the settings there was some arcing between the contacts and it quit working. So I took it apart and the little balls that are necessary for the switch to select different postions went flying.

I'm going to order one of those soldering stations too. At least I know someone who has one, so if I have any problems I know where to get advice

I'm going to put my order in this afternoon so I have some time to finalize it.
From the suggestions I got, I'm going to order 1k and 4.7k resistors (any other values that would be good to have on hand? $3.00 for 1000 of them)
I'm also getting the soldering station that Evandude has. along with some heatshrink tubing and sodium persulfate. Anything that I missed?
