Mike,

Try to answer Nigel's question :

Why do you have a problem with entering your location?

Maybe it'll help us see your point. Because for now, it just looks like *you* have a problem with entering your location. I was under the impression that most just couldn't be bothered with entering it, and very few would still hide if they were actually required to enter something in that field.

I don't see how wanting to know someone's origin is "old fashioned". Maybe what you mean is that it is too "real world" for the web?

I'm also not sure how anyone's fluency in english can be interpreted as a geographic location?

What do you mean by "foreign"? Foreign to what? I don't know, because it doesn't says anywhere what country you're from. Foreign to any english-speaking country? Man does the world look simple in your head. How about a Mexican immigrant in the US? He's he foreign? Foreign to what? This forum?! Say that Mexican member asks a question about where to find RS-232 chips, I don't care if he had guacamole for breakfast. But I do need to know what country he lives in, so that if by any chance it's Canada, I can help him, if not, someone else will provided we know where he lives.

If they are fluent in English, then it doesn't matter where they are from...
You don't get it. Have you read the whole thread?

how can so many questions be country specific?
Again, read the thread...

Just imagine the number of posts that are asking for help regarding:
HF Transmiter, Line voltage, Phone line, Where to buy stuff, Legal issues...
there are more then we realize. And I agree with Nigel that if they provide us with Location info from the beginning, it might reduce number of replies needed.

Sorry Joel - you are right I was being a bit narrow minded there - by foreign, I mean foreign to the Wetern world... . I do not have a simple wiew of the world - you obviously didn't uderstand me. Where I live (In the UK as it is relevant here) there are a lot of older people with old fashioned views about country of origin (to be politically correct lol). Again I will say that some folks will not help people from other countries where culture etc is different. & again like I say I have seen it on electronics forums. Thats my views, and we obviously all have different point of view on this, so we should probably leave it there.

Regards,

Mike

OK thanks Jay - I didn't realise there were so many of these types of questions. I can now see why you might want people to fill in their location field, or maybe just say where they live when it is relevant (as a compromise :-) cos I'm rubbish at admitting I'm wrong.... ).

You've never been to Bradford or London then? By "diverse country" I assume you mean race-wise? I'd say the UK is now possibly biggest "multi-cultural" country in Europe. Down my street there are several asian families, and also many single male African & Eastern European guys. There is a mosque around the corner, and a catholic church opposite. There is a corner shop owned by 6 guys (I'm not sure where they are from - Middle East looking) There is also a small Russian community next to the park. I could go on all night but I've got to sleep. It's 1 in the morning here.

BYE

Ok guys, please take it elsewhere. You're not contributing anything good to the discussion. And maybe try to ease up on sugar?, you both sound like you had one bowl of Froot Loops too many.

We have Froot Loops (or is it Fruit Loops here???) in the states. I've had a chance to live in Ireland for two months, and it was different, but not in a foreign, akward sense. (note that the trip was split over two one month stays in a period of 5 years....)

Overall it was a great experience, and when I have enough money (yeah, right) I'll buy a second home there.

I think I'm too old to be a prodigy of any kind, but who knows?

And to relate to the thread title, I filled in my location a few weeks ago. I realized what kind of confusion it caused and figured it wasn't a problem. My parents are a bit over-protective at times though.
