Personally I consider it a good idea to have them disabled, certainly my forums have them disabled, and I've no intention of doing otherwise.

I don't know Electromasters thoughts on it?, but I presume he doesn't like the idea either?.

how about embedding Latex into the forum.

at edaboard you can use Latex to write anything easily. subscripts, superscripts, fractions, greek and latin symbols.

would someone comment on that

I do not understand why HTML tags are a problem ? I do not think phpBB allows all HTML tags. So there cannot be un authorized pop-ups or redirects.

Javascript is dangerous!!!

But LaTex is a good idea... http://www.edaboard.com/forums.html uses it.
