I think the HTML tags must be enabled.
Here is a topic that desperately needs subscripts and superscripts. http://www.electro-tech-online.com/v...?p=84755#84755 I have enabled HTML in my profile but the Options says HTML is OFF

I do not understand why HTML tags are a problem ? I do not think phpBB allows all HTML tags. So there cannot be un authorized pop-ups or redirects.
Javascript is dangerous!!! But LaTex is a good idea... http://www.edaboard.com/forums.html uses it. To Nigel Goodwin : And what is the address of your forum ?
