Im nick, 16. i need help with a project.
im working on a base 10 to base 16 converter on electronic workbench. i made the circuits to display the base 16 symbols(i had to use 7-seg display, im not allowed to use the 7-seg display decoded).

but the thing is i dont know how to make it so it converts a number higher than 16, i need to circuit to convert a maximum of 9999(base 10) to base16.

i dont want it to be done for me, i want to know where to start, a clue, something to point me in the right direction.

Hello, I'v been reading something about Microcontrollers fundamentals, and they begin talking about some basic stuff about digital systems like floating point numbers, two's complement, the ASCII, unicode, etc.

But before the make a deep description about microcontrollers and talking about programming them, they talk about a "design process" and they use an example to illustrate it, that design process consists of many stages defining every step that you are going to take to acomplish your design. Then they talk about using the top-down design, bottom-up implementation (they make a quick definition, and I already looked it up), they recommend the use of the structure chart to se how the hardware and software will interact and interface with one another. To work out every sub-system (after the top-down, bottom-up technique) they use the UML activity diagram, they also say that before coding any software you should work out every detail at the UML activity diagram. They also say that you should be able to code the algorithm directly from the UML activity diagram.

I've not finished reading all about the example, but I would like to know if it's common to use this techniques to make this type deigns, are they really helpful? or am I wasting my time reading that?
What can you say about that?

Thanks.

I hadn't realized it was due to happen so soon but on the 1st of this month it became illegal to sell incandescent bulbs (or globes as they're called here) in Australia. So I go to buy some bulbs today and there are only low energy (fluorescent) available. I hate those things and go look in another shop. Here I find what look like normal bulbs but with a halogen bulb in the center. They are also "energy efficient" bulbs and only use 40W to provide the same as a conventional 60W.

Well, I'm impressed, the 40W halogens are visibly brighter than 60W tungstens and the light is so much nicer. I love them.

My aunt and uncle bought a brand new Toyota Prius a few months ago and I had the opportunity to drive it for a long distance trip a few weeks ago...

My aunt and uncle bought a brand new Toyota Prius a few months ago and I had the opportunity to drive it for a long distance trip a few weeks ago too! :)

Heres what I thought.

Surprisingly comfortable for a small car! :)
I am a big person (6 foot 3 inch's and 250 pounds) and I liked the feel of the seats even after 11 hours on the road.
However for me there was no head room except for the added clearance given from the sun roof recess. Its a tight fit as well. Granted its comfortable but very tight quarters. Especially with four people and luggage as well. :(
Most people over about 5 foot 8 inches tall will find it a bit of a nuisance to get in and out of though. You have to bend down rather far to keep from hitting your head when getting in and the low ground and head clearance plus tight quarters makes it somewhat harder for older or taller people with limited flexibility, strength or of larger builds to get in and out of.:(

Its got surprisingly good low speed power and rides like a large full sized luxury car with a pleasantly sporty feel. It has a fairly heavy feel road wise. But it does still seem to get pushed around by wind like any smaller vehicle does though.
Unfortunately at higher road speeds it really has to wind up that little engine to get any power out of it. The fuel economy meter nearly touches zero at that point.:(

The toys and gadgets are well thought out and reasonably user friendly. It has a rather basic but well designed interior as well. The main touch screen control system is a bit of a challenge to use and navigate while driving though. The buttons and menus seem a bit out of order and small.

My aunt and uncle say it does in fact have outstanding in town fuel economy. (30 -32 on average as they have noted)
However its actual as driven mileage at highway and interstate speeds quickly drops off. After 10 hours at interstate speeds the actual fuel mileage was around 34 MPG. :(
Sorry but my 1994 Mercury Grand Marquis pulls a consistent 28 -32 on the same trip even loaded down with four people and luggage. :)

Sorry but for the price and what I do I wouldn't buy one. :(
But if I was a city person who needed to drive a reasonable distance everyday in stop and go traffic I would definitely recommend it! :)

Good Day,

I noticed a weird phenomena about my hearing, when ever I listen to classical music such as Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, Vivaldi, my ears never give me any problems even at high decibel levels. However, when I listen to modern garbage such as rock and techno my ears screech even at moderate decibel levels. Could it be that human (or perhaps my) hearing is based on fundamental sine wave frequency + harmonics? I mean I enjoy live classical concerts but I can't go to clubs because my ears screech so much that I cannot stand the pain. Does any one else have similar symptoms ?

Wavy word pop ups.

I was told an interesting story about those wavy word pop ups you see all the time on most websites a few days ago.

Apparently they are not a security feature but part of a massive world wide attempt to use the mass public to help fill in the odd words that text recognition software has trouble with when converting old books, documents, and typeset text into modern electronic media.

Being that very old documents and books where printed one at a time with manually set letter blocks it was common for the text to shift around from one page to the next as it was being printed.
Plus being that they where often pushed into the paper a bit too hard at times creases would occasionally form and some text would end up being printed over a crease and cause a splitting of the letter or letters near by.

because of these shifted letters, faded letters, blurry letters, and physical anomalies text recognition cant accurately recognize the individual letters and translate them. It can only identify that there is a word there.
That selected mystery word block gets sent to a master data collection system that in turn sends that word out to the sites that have that wavy word pop up and when someone reads it and types in its assumed correct spelling it is then sent back to the data base and used to fill in its formerly missing spot in the sentence of what ever book or document that it related to thats presently being converted.

Way cool! :)

Is there some sort of clothing fad that I'm unaware of? I've been noticing a good many people wearing pajama bottoms and cheap rubber flip-flops to schools, shopping stores, etc. Today I saw a 50-60yr. old man wearing AC/DC pajama bottoms while shopping in a WalMart. He looked comical. Last week a similar aged tubbie was wearing Mountain Dew branded jammie bottoms in a grocery store.
College students walking to their classes look as if they just rolled out of bed and into the classroom. They drag their feet, making annoying shuffling sounds. Dressed that way and walking like that, they come across as being lazy and uninterested. It's disrespectful to the professors who spend a great deal of time and effort preparing their lessons and striving to provide a high quality education. :(

I know that many friends in this forum are very much concerned about electronics.

Making a circuit work according to your wishes and imagination is really great.

I also bet that almost nobody bothers taking care of the beauty of electronics.

Enjoying life I also enjoy making beautiful looking PCB designs. :)

Here is an example I'd prefer to call it "Southern Sky".

The stars in that picture are nothing but vias, but I think the picture looks great.

The board is populated with 22 ICs, 16 power Mosfet Transistors, 16 small signal transistors, 32 LEDs, some switches and buttons.

Board size is 7.17X6.07".
