The PIC12F508-I/SN is 0.52 £. It comes in 150 mil SOIC package.
For the DIP8, look at the PIC12F508-I/P that can be programmed without using an adaptor. It's 0.55 £ as you said, but I've seen that it's out of stock?

But I thought it was the PIC12C508A, that can only be programmed once?

The PIC12F508-I/SN is alright, isn't it?

The PIC12F508 looks good for your project, but it's not loaded with peripherals - that might become useful for future projects (ADCs, PWM) - and has a two levels stack. I would buy some PIC12F683s too (my personal favourite).

Also the 16f54 is even more obsolete than the 16f84 - why don't you just get a 16f628?
Because at £1.99, it's over three times as expensive and that's only for the PIC16F628-04/SO, the PIC16F628-04I/SS is £2.36 and I'm not paying that.

Cost wouldn't be a problem if I only wanted to buy one but I want to get a few so I can practice using them and I don't want to buy expensive PICs in case I ruin them.

I'll go for that, it doesn't bother me that it's out of stock, i've waited long enough so I don't mind waiting a bit longer.
