Using a temperature controlled soldering iron may help a little, but modern components are very tough, it's difficult to damage them. But soldering should be very quick, one or two seconds is all a joint should take.

Like anything else, practice makes perfect, but I taught my daughter to solder in ten minutes or so, when she was about 9 or 10 years old - she's built a number of kits over the last few years, and solders quite well. Her DT teacher says she's the best solderer in the school, including himself!.

There's apparently a good soldering guide at http://www.epemag.wimborne.co.uk.

I use 12-15w for most electronic soldering needs. 30w good for large components only.

if you clamp an aligator clip to the lead between the componant and the joint it will absorb the heat instead of heating the componant
