RQ : Speaker's Timer / Conference Timer - Electronic Circuits Projects Diagrams Free

Hello,
I`ve got a task - to built 3, 5, 7 and 10 minutes delay timer for conferences. In my first project I used a couple 555 timers (TLC555 from Texas Instruments), but my teachers didn`t like it.
So, can someone tell me what other devices (PIC`s, Integrals, etc. ) I can use for my task and can someone give me a basic information, datasheets, circuits or URL`s for it. Thank you !
