Hi,
I want to have a radio shack impact sensor (opens when hit) turn on a 12v lamp/strobe for about 3-5 seconds. This will be used with a steel rifle target that is so far away it's hard to tell if its been hit. This is a fun project for me and I'm sure an easy question for the pros on this site.

use tilt or mercury switch and monostable set to 3-5 second

Use a transistor to invert the open to a short which will trigger an LM555 for 3 to 5 seconds. The 555 will operate a small lamp directly, or use an emitter follower for more current.
