Default RS232 to RS485 help

Maybe this is not applicable to this forum, but then maybe somebody has experiance with these times of communications.
My question is i have 6 pieces of electronic equipment (electricity meters) that have RS232 2 wire connections, and the manufacturer has just sent me new software that allows the reading of the meters remotely via RS485, they say this obtained with a RS232-RS485 adaptor and then creating a 485 bus between the meters. However if possible i do not wish to replace the meters with the RS485 version and want to know if it is possible to fit a convertor at each meter therefore converting the 485 back to 232 for the software to be able to read the meter when send the meter number.
Any help information would be appreciated
