Default how to build battery charger

i would like to build a car battery charger, which will cut off the charging phase automatically when the battery is fully charged.
can anyone give me some ideas or tutorials on where to start?

I have build this charger back in 1993, it its working !!!!!!
Using a fully charged battery adjust the "P" until the Green LED just about start to go ON. ~14v~

This circuit is from Hobby elektronika 1991/11

Texas Instruments and others make ICs designed for this purpose, such as the UC3909 (for lead-acid batteries): http://focus.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/uc3909.pdf

You may get a suitable circuit from National Semiconductor Data Sheet for LM350/150. I've built this and now it is up & running.
