Some parts - Electronic Circuits Projects Diagrams Free

A friend of mines just gave me a bunch of stuff:

QTY - Part

1 - 7 Seg. LED

Anyone got any ideas on something i can create with this?

Can i use a MAX232 to communicate with something that doesnt have a chip? Like send a current to a transistors through serial to light a led for like 1 sec?

Since im a nooB i was just woundering.. info on any of these would be great

Info meaning tutorials or links to more information. I have all the datasheets on these already. But some further typical uses would be awsome. Thanks. I know these arent like wow! parts most can be obtained for free from Maxim site as sample (for testing of course). But any extra information beside datasheet would be great.
