can someone tell me how I can make this circuit work with 12v DC? This kit by velleman does exactly what I have been looking for except I need it to run off of DC.

It uses an AC triac to vary the duty-cycle of the AC power to the load.
Its micro-controller is sync'd to the AC. A DC lamp dimmer circuit is completely different.

There are hundreds of DC lamp dimmer circuits.
But since you don't say how much current you need for your lamps then it is impossible to pick one.
