Maybe a pushbutton where you hold it?

Switched or not, how is it supposed to give you a shock? - you need contact from two electrodes to two points on the body, like a stun gun. The gi you're wearing would insulate you as well, so you would need pointy spikes to penetrate the gi - a shock would be pointless, as you're going to shread your opponents body!

Either that or you'd need a pretty high voltage, 25kV might be enough and keeping a capacitor charged at that voltage is going to take a considerable amount of power. The whole idea is flawed from the start, then there's the question of safety, the whole point of using wooden knives is to avoid injury, the worst you're going to get is a nasty bruise, once you start adding electricity in to the equation you don't know what will happen, if someone's tired it might be enough to kill them.

A camera flash circuit? They are low power and will make you wake up pretty quick. Plus they are easy to modifiy.

They only output 200V to 300V - not enough to penetrate a gi.

Have you noticed?, no one has asked what a 'gi' is yet?

No. it's a thick cotton garment that wraps around the body, like this.

I think 'gi' is japanese for pyjamas?

The one in the picture is more like a Judo gi, exceptionally thick and strong, Brazilian Ju Jitsu is more of a sport (like Judo) than a self defence system.

We wear light or medium weight karate gi's, as in normal Ju Jitsu you don't use the gi to throw, except for a 'lapel and shoulder throw'.

Buy one of these: (U$S 2)
Dismantle It, and put it into the knife's handle....It uses only an "A" battery.
I use them for little electronic fences....
My dog learnt where NOT to pee, in almost 3 nasty shocks....
