It will boot from CD and allow you to change admin password for your system

Restart your computer, hold down F8. It will bring up a boot menu

Start with Safe Mode

Log in as Administrator

Go to the control panel

select users

select your user account you forgot the password for

click on "change password", and enter a new password.

Hero99, I thought that may be the case, it is for XP professional - I was hoping the "home" edition would do things differently.

I've done a bit of research and it turns out you can access recovery console using the Windows installation CD which is sensible.

I Forgot My Administrator Password!

problem with windows repair is that it will kill all your "updates" and not that rare nuss effect is that some applications stop working.

the easiest way is just to dl / burn / boot from cd...
