surely in most of those countries 99.9% of the population are too poor to own a pc, so it's a pointless excercise blocking their access.

They probably don't have access to phones or electricicty either.

I see England isn't on the list yet. Tony must be loosing his touch

Chinese gov. officials are already experiencing pains with the younger generation's thirst and push for a freer society, less censorship, more technology in their daily living, easier access to owning automobiles, etc.

I'm suprised there's no mention of child p0rn here, aren't there some contries who blatently allow peodaphiles to abuse children and publish films of this on the Internet.

EDIT:
Now this is stupid, the silly forum software won't allow me to say the word porn but it can be circumvented by using [COLOR] tags. I was mistakenly under the impression that this forum was against censorship, what's goint on?

Like any sensible forum, there are certain words in a banned list - no one has ever suggested that doing this constitutes 'censorship' - just a common-sense measure against bad language.

As for 'censorship', the moderators will censor and delete any posts that are considered 'offensive' (and probably ban the offenders) - but again, this is simple common-sense.

Sometimes it's acceptable if certain words are used within context. I don't think there should be any banned words, it should be like everything else - at the moderators discretion.

I agree but there's fine ballance between over and under censorship and I think this forum has got it right, apart from the bad word list of course.

That means the moderators have to personally check every word, it's FAR simpler to use the banned word facility included in forum software. It also means the words aren't there until a mod sees and removes them.

The world is full of complete idiots, and many can't be trusted to behave in a decent manner - a banned word list is a simple precaution.

In some other cases it gets taken too far, for example at our local council you can't apply to the planning office for the 'erection of a building', which is the correct term, and the term required on a planning application - but the PC do-gooders have it banned!.

Well there's always p0rn but both pron and p0rn look childish in my oppinion.

Tell me about it, half the work related sites are blocked where I work. I have to email the administrator every time I want to unblock a site, which they normally do even though it sometimes takes awhile.

This is stupid, it's like been at school, no worse than school, at school the only thing that was blocked was porn and violence. Before getting the job I had to sign a contract saying I agreed with their computer use policy, why is this not good enough I don't know.

I work for an ISP. You should see our list (very large and we have wildcards too). We run lots of RAM on the servers to handle the list with all the incoming EMAIL.

We do let pron thru but we block [WORD CENSORED], as it is normally a spam from someplace. And sure the pron will be killed one day as the spammers catch on or use it more.

As an ISP SERVICE, all outside mail coming in has to be checked. On a forum, it is inside mail to inside people, you could hack the code and say IF "senior member" THEN do not check the list. Since we are mailing inside to inside.

But that sounds like a lot of work and asking the moderators of a free service to modify the code might be a bit much. I think they work hard enough putting up with all of us.

Free speech is cool, but in my home my kids have me to censor them. My house is not a public place. When they go elsewhere I guess they can do what they want. But I hoped I raised them better.

Block what?

This censoring of words rubbish is annoying as we can't even have a decent conversation about censorship.

If you don't like it, then don't come here! - it's an administrator option so i can't do anything about it anyway - but if I could, I wouldn't, and almost all forums will have it enabled.

From what I can gather you must want to use abusive language here? - if not, why are you making a fuss?.

No, I don't.

Because it sometimes obstructs serious debate.

I'm obviously not that botherd or I would've left by now. Just because I'm complaining about one of the things I don't like about this forum it doesn't mean I think it's bad in general. There are many things I don't like about some of my freinds and family and they're things they don't like about me but it doesn't mean we're bad people or we don't get along in general.
