Its a photo resistor. It changes resistance acording to the light falling on it.

it is similar to a LDR, does it work in the same way or the oposite way? im not quite sure

I think Cds means Cardium sulfate wich is i thnk used in these things.
A LDR is Light Dependent Resistor. There are other ways of detecting light like an photo didoe, photo transistor,LED,solar cell...

yes but a Cds wired up to just a battery and a light/ buzzer will come on ONLY when there is light, is it the same for an LDR?
also, instead of the 50k pot used in this circuit, could i use a 10k? what would be the diference? It's just that i broke my 50k Edit: oops sorry, thaught it was in the nightlight thread, i got confused because both threads contain the word Cds cell in them lol |

Just delete the statements about the pots and this post fits in hee.
But if you conect an LDR in seris whith an batery and buzer wont it then waste a lot of power.Becos an LDR wond go fuly off anf full on ir will just change its resistance. So wen the buzzer is off the LDR is still pasig some curnet trough but too smal for the buzzer to run on and that is wasting the baterys.
