Audio Design Resources on the Web

Blog entry posted in 'Audio', March 30, 2010.

I often see the question asked "where do i find information about designing audio amps and such?"

Here is a list of resources i recommend if you want to learn about audio circuit design...

    1) Audio Design information in general (How-To's and Why)
    Elliott Sound Products http://www.sound.westhost.com/index2.html
About a week to a month's worth of reading. Lots of great info on the hows and whys of audio design, plus lots of great
projects to build, from beginner to expert level. He even sells parts and PC board kits.

    Doug Self's Amplifier Institute http://www.dself.dsl.pipex.com/ampins/ampins.htm
Good reading, especially his article about distortion in amplifiers and how to weed most of it out of your design. Great
logical and systematic approach. He has also written some great books about audio design.

    National Semiconductor's Application Note AN-A http://www.national.com/an/AN/AN-A.pdf#page=1
Everything you need to know about the basics of power amp design.... Yes, really... Op amps and audio amps have
a lot of circuits and design methods in common. What works in one, usually works in the other. The topology of a class
AB power amp is identical to an op amp. A must-read.

    Renardson Audio Designs. http://www.angelfire.com/ab3/mjramp/index.html
Some well thought out amplifier designs, as well as some good design and testing information.

    Walt Jung's Library Page http://waltjung.org/Library.html
Walt Jung is/was the lead engineer at Analog Devices and has written numerous books about op amps and audio
circuit design. There is a link on his page to download the complete "Op Amp Applications" book from ADI.

NOTE: There probably are a lot I left out, but these are the resources I recommend most often.

    2) Forums:
    This one. http://www.electro-tech-online.com
You can ask just about any question about electronics you want here and find someone to give you a reasonable
answer. Avoid asking about how to make destructive devices, I will issue you a Marvin Award and read you "The Riot
Act". Others will also read you "the Riot Act".

    Do It Yourself Audio http://www.diyaudio.com
I spend a lot of time there. It's Audio Geek Heaven. You can find threads and discussions on ALL aspects of audio
design. You can find people there, from the tinkerer, to some excellent audio engineers, to answer your questions.

    3) Books..... There are really too many to list them all, and i'm not posting any links to them. I will however start a list of titles, and when i know it, the author.

Audio Power Amplifier Design Handbook by Doug Self.

High Power Audio Amplifier Design by G. Randy Slone

Radiotron Designer's Handbook published by RCA. last edition was printed in the 1950's and has some excellent
    material about audio

1970 Audio Applications Handbook published by National Semiconductor (the original was in 2 volumes, but there are
reprints available that have it all as one book)

Op Amp Cookbook by Walt Jung

    The Guitar Amplifier Repair Handbook

    4) Also recommended:
Any Audio Application Notes from Analog Devices, National Semiconductor, Linear Technology, Texas Instruments.
