A street light is at least 400W. 50 very expensive Lumileds LEDs won't be as bright.
A solar panel to charge a huge battery would cost a fortune for the 400W load.

Using two small solar panels to charge the NiMH batteries can easily be accomplished with a simple dc-dc converter integrated circuit that will output a few milliamps with a voltage as low as .6 volts and the ambient current loss in a non charging mode is in the microamp range. It could stay "turned on" all the time. A switch to activate the LED's could use a chip exactly like the one for charging to operate from the batteries with a simple 3 wire lead regulator like the Zetex version of the 78L03 using 2 small resistors in a current regulator. Two simple I.C.'s, a 3 pin regulator, maybe half dozen resistors and two small capacitors.......depends on how small you want to build it, how good your eyes are, how steady is your hand and can you hand solder tiny little surface mount parts....

Mathsgene - The simplest way I can think of to do it is get some sort of relective perspex and make a mold for it and stick it in the oven for a bit and press it into the mold until it cools. That would be a simple and cheap weay to do it, you could use two bits and stick a piece of tinfoil between the sheets of perspex for a more reflective piece.

i so much respect your unwavering understanding of new members like me. To fix the structure is not my problem but all i want is the circuit that will be simple and efficient, that can make it bright with a solar panel of 40 watts.
