Does the 8051 have hardware SPI? Could you use something less ancient than an 8051?

A processor with a 8051 core isn't necessarily outdated like the old 8051. There are processors with an 8051 core that run at 100 MIPs such as Silab's MCUs.

The only real thing the old 8051 has in common with those chips is the instruction set.
