How about simply checking the subject lines of new threads for common alarms like 'urgent', '!!!!!!!!!!', starting with "Help" and containing 2 words or fewer, etc. Then just fail with a friendly "Your subject line does not appear to be descriptive enough. Please describe the post in 10 or fewer words." or something like that.

that's the downside of the google generation.

if you have a problem, do you ty to solve it, or just put the correct words into google and find someone who already has?

I, like some of you really can't be bothered even reading threads that have something like "help me plz" for the thread name, there are just to many of them, and you have no idea what they need help with. Maybe we could make a rule, that whatever you need help with, is in your thread name.

Banning "help" in the subject title is unreasonable. HOwever, I think "urgent" should really be banned and so should any title that has more than 2 identical, consecutive characters.

ie.

"hhheeeeellllllp meeeee plzzzzzzzzzzzz"

Maybe "plz" should be banned.

Isn't that already and UNWRITTEN rule? It is just the considerate thing to do.

I agree with dknguyen. "plz" should be banned.

Just like when using Usenet, you're expected to hang around and check out the local culture, read the stickies (group FAQs on Usenet), and so on, before posting in web forums. The information on what is acceptable and what is not is available. Maybe the very first time someone uses forums it is reasonable that they might not know this, but if they've been on the Internet for more than a week they really ought to learn good manners.

It's not something which being from another country should impact. I first got on to the Internet when I was living in Finland for several years during the early 1990's, and the rules were no different. I would suggest that most of the people on this forum are not from the U.S. either.

Hmm? When did this become a poll?

I voted NO! The word "help" is totally legit. Sure, there maybe a few better alternatives, but, "help" should NOT be banned. For example;

Need some help with my Inchworm

Wouldn't that be a legit title? Or what about

Need help getting my first LED to blink

isn't that legit? I would say so. If anything needs banning, it it is the words "Sir" and "Plz".

If you ban the word "Help", you might as well ban "PIC AVR Transistor Capacitor Error", and the like.

Point stated.

Ideally, need, help, plz, urgent, and '....' shouldn't necessarily be banned, but the title should have a minimum length and those words don't count.
